SPORTING a sleek, mini-Native American headdress gifted to her by a fan, and in a dazzling glitter ensemble, Kelis began this gig by commanding everyone to dance or get out. After the furious R'n'B howl of Caught Out There and the catchy, inexplicable lyrics of Milkshake that established her name, this was the Harlemite resurgent as a Euro disco queen, her pulsating set performed before a giant human heart backdrop.

Milkshake received brief play here, mashed up into a medley with Madonna's Holiday for a bubblegum pop sequence in what was otherwise an hour of unrelenting drive, tracks segueing into each other like a DJ set. Scream and 22nd Century set a futuristic template, the snarling, robotic funk of Young, Fresh N' New morphing easily into a hollering interpretation of Tinie Tempah's Pass Out, while a soulful rendition of Terence Trent D'Arby's Sign Your Name was bolstered with throbbing house backing.

Despite the cut and pasting of Kelis' back catalogue into her current dance sound, she made it appear seamless. The bouncy Bossy was a natural enough convert, while snatches of the southern sunniness of Lil' Star were a more surprising inclusion. Tellingly, though, she retained the softer Get Along With You from her debut album for the more dropped down atmosphere of the encore. After an up and down career, dance divadom seems to be a natural fit for Kelis.

This is everything that Mark Ronson’s gig on Friday night wasn’t: a smooth, clubby, cool segue between songs which are effortlessly brilliant, a set that bounces with arms-aloft energy and joyful enthusiasm, from a woman who knows what makes a great night out for her audience, rather than her ego.

Looking astonishingly svelte in a bodyhugging catsuit with a striking feather headdress which, when she pulls Judderman angular poses mid-song gives her a jaggy, stalking Shockheaded Peter look, she sounds as gorgeous as she looks. If you don’t believe me, check the video for ‘Acapella’ – and wolves are so this autumn, darling.

And she’s so sweet! After the thrillingly bassy thump-thump of the huge heart beating on the backdrop during her intro while samples – including a prescient dod of Tears for Fears’s angsty ‘Shout’ – stab hither and thither as she struts on to the stage, she issues a modest and heartfelt “thank you” to guy who had earlier in the afternoon delivered said fabulous titfer (William Chambers, a Scots designer, it later transpires). Then, speechifying done, she instructs us to dance, delivering what feels like a perfect mix of live gig and DJ brilliance; synergy, harmony, and a blitz of asskicking tunes.

Her vocals are sampled and looped together, wound around as she sings her own backing vox and gliding harmonies, breezily showing off what a beautiful voice she has, while she leads us on an aerobically-challenging seamlessly groovesome voyage through house, electro-rap and disco-sass-pop underpinned by the tight, top-notch, sleek outfit of live drummer plus synths and two sets of decks.

Just as the thought occurs that she’s stepping up to snatch Madonna’s crown as NYCentric disco queen, and could teach upstart Rhianna a thing or two to boot, she launches into a genius blast of ‘Holiday’ rammed head-on into her lollipop-hit ‘Milkshake’. Smart and funny wins every time.

Rather than moping about her broken relationship with Nas, from which she has a 14-month-old son Knight to whom she dedicates the track ‘Song for the Baby’, her new album Flesh Tone is fierce, some of the best work she’s done in a 12-year career, and from it club hit ‘Acapella’, retro-futurist ‘22^nd Century’ and ‘Shout’ are undeniably standout tracks tonight.

The woman, the music and this gig are damn hot. You want glitter, baby, Kelis is the real deal.
